Background of the Study

Family involvement in the care of patients has long been recognized as a key factor in improving health outcomes and enhancing recovery, particularly in patients with chronic or life-threatening conditions such as cardiovascular diseases (Bolarinwa & Okwuosa, 2024). The role of family members in the recovery process can be especially significant in the context of cardiac care, where the emotional, physical, and psychological support provided by loved ones can aid in managing stress, improving adherence to prescribed treatments, and encouraging positive lifestyle changes (Abdullahi et al., 2023). In Ogun State, where healthcare access and infrastructure challenges may affect patient outcomes, the active participation of families in the care process could bridge gaps and ensure a more holistic recovery approach for cardiac patients.

Cardiac conditions often require long-term management, including medication adherence, lifestyle modifications, and psychological adjustments. Family members play a vital role in supporting these aspects of care, ensuring that patients remain committed to their treatment regimens, attend follow-up appointments, and maintain healthier lifestyles (Oluwatoyin & Olusola, 2023). Nurses, as part of their duties, can encourage family involvement in the nursing process, facilitating communication between healthcare providers and families, and empowering families to take an active role in managing the patient’s condition. However, the specific effect of family involvement in nursing care on the recovery of cardiac patients in Ogun State remains underexplored. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the impact of family involvement in nursing care on the recovery of cardiac patients.

Statement of the Problem

In Ogun State, cardiac patients often experience slow or suboptimal recovery due to a variety of factors, including insufficient support systems, non-adherence to prescribed treatments, and the emotional strain of managing chronic health conditions. Although family involvement has been shown to improve patient recovery in various healthcare settings, there is a lack of research examining how family involvement in nursing care specifically impacts the recovery process for cardiac patients in Ogun State. This study aims to fill this gap and provide valuable insights into the role of families in enhancing cardiac patients' recovery.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of family involvement in the nursing care of cardiac patients in Ogun State.
  2. To examine the relationship between family involvement and the recovery outcomes of cardiac patients.
  3. To identify strategies for enhancing family involvement in the nursing care of cardiac patients in Ogun State.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent are family members involved in the nursing care of cardiac patients in Ogun State?
  2. How does family involvement in nursing care influence the recovery of cardiac patients in Ogun State?
  3. What strategies can be used to improve family involvement in the nursing care of cardiac patients?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Family involvement in nursing care has a positive effect on the recovery outcomes of cardiac patients in Ogun State.
  2. There is a significant relationship between the level of family involvement in nursing care and patient recovery in cardiac care settings.
  3. The implementation of structured family involvement programs improves recovery outcomes for cardiac patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on cardiac patients receiving care in hospitals within Ogun State. Limitations may include varying degrees of family involvement due to socio-economic constraints, cultural factors, and the challenges in measuring recovery outcomes across diverse patient demographics.
